The 2017 admission process at St. Petersburg State University proved to be exceptionally fruitful. Applications from applicants were accepted until July 26. To get into the first wave, applicants needed to bring the original certificate before August 1. However, the priority is given (in the zero wave) to applicants who have the right to enroll without entrance examinations (members of the national team for the International Olympiads, winners of the All-Russian Olympiads, etc). Typically, the number of such students is small and amounts to no more than 10-15 percent of the total number of state-funded places, but this year for the program 01.03.01 “Mathematics” more than 48 applications have already been submitted by applicants who have the right to enroll without entrance examinations. At the same time, the total number of state-funded places in the program is 45. The level of achievements of future mathematicians is also impressive. Of the six members of the national team for the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, four have chosen the undergraduate program “Mathematics” at St. Petersburg State University! The first 21 people on the list are winners of the All-Russian Olympiads (16 in Mathematics, 4 in Informatics and 1 in Astronomy). According to the rules of admission, in the event that there are more winners of the Olympiads applying to the program than places, the applicants are ranked according to individual achievements. Fields medalist, the chairman of the Council of the educational program “Mathematics” of St. Petersburg State University Stanislav Smirnov believes that such a system is not quite perfect:
– It seems to me that all applicants with comparable successes at the Olympiads should have an opportunity to be enrolled in the undergraduate program in Mathematics. The board of the educational program “Mathematics” is looking for an opportunity to get funding for extra places. Yesterday morning, fundraising was announced. It has already been possible to raise 1 million rubles, which enables to pay for 4 additional places on the program. I hope that in the end, we will be able to accept all talented students.
